The Rundown

Boca is pulling its license plate readers off state roads by the end of the month

The Florida Department of Transportation has ordered every automated license plate reader off state roadways and rights of way, and Boca Raton police confirmed more than two dozen of theirs come down by September 30. They sit on Federal Highway, A1A, Glades Road and Yamato Road. FDOT cited the growth in deployments plus reports of misuse, data privacy concerns and surveillance schemes. The department operates 262 readers in total, so the ones on city streets stay put.

Two Boca men pleaded guilty to an $8 million fake invoice scheme

Alec Dierna, 32, and John Engler, 40, both of Boca Raton, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Between August 2020 and July 2022 they mailed businesses across the country invoices that looked real, from companies that were not, under names like Office Outlet and America's Best, for office products nobody ordered. Thousands of companies paid. The total came to $8,010,543.50. Sentencing is set for February 10, 2027, and the charge carries up to 20 years.

The library is giving away prizes for signing up this month

September is Library Card Sign Up Month, and the Palm Beach County Library System is running an incentive: bring a friend or family member to get a new card or renew an expired one and you are entered in a prize drawing, plus a limited edition keychain while they last. Worth knowing if you have a student in the house, since the card covers e-books, audiobooks, movies, research databases and learning kits, not just paper.

The Plate

The one month the expensive rooms let you in

Flavor South Florida is back for September. Set menus, set price, at restaurants that spend the other eleven months quietly assuming you cannot afford them 🍽️ Delray is running its own Restaurant Month at the same time, so you have thirty days and no excuse for the place you keep saying you will try.

The Find

The best closet in Boca happens to be a store on North Federal

POSH Consignment by V is the kind of place you walk into for one thing and leave an hour later. Authenticated Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Celine and Cartier, plus shoes, ready to wear and fine jewelry, and the inventory turns over constantly so it is never the same shop twice 👜

V has a genuinely great eye, everything is verified before it hits the floor, and the prices make pieces you have been admiring for years suddenly reasonable. If you cannot get in, they run live shopping on Instagram midweek and it is worth setting a reminder for.

40 N Federal Highway. Summer hours Monday to Saturday, 11 to 4.

Good to Know

Rumor has it a Whole Foods is going into the Tri-Rail lot

Seventeen acres of asphalt at 680 W. Yamato is finally becoming something. 13th Floor Investments has foundations in the ground for Boca Village: eight stories, 340 apartments, 51 of them affordable or workforce, and about 29,500 square feet of street level retail with a spot carved out for an outdoor restaurant 🏗️

Here is the part nobody has announced. Word around town is that a Whole Foods is taking a piece of that retail. Unconfirmed, no signed tenant, and the sign on the fence still says FOR LEASE. But you heard it here first.

Either way, Boca is finally building something you can walk to a train from. Know something about that retail? Hit reply, we will chase it.
