The city started mailing its Your Property Taxes Explained brochure the week of September 1, so it is arriving now. Worth opening rather than assuming. Boca residents pay $693.4 million a year in property taxes and the city keeps $150 million of that, about 21.67 percent. The rest goes to the county, the school district and a list of other taxing agencies most people have never had a reason to learn. The city rate is 3.66, among the lowest for a full service city in Florida. Printed copies are at City Hall, 201 West Palmetto Park Road.

Council voted 3 to 2 to ban feeding nuisance wildlife in Boca, meaning iguanas, rats, mice and pigeons, with a $100 fine attached. Bird feeders are exempt and so is feeding feral cats, so the setup most people already have in the backyard is untouched. The whole thing traces back to one neighbor reporting another for feeding somewhere between 150 and 200 pigeons, which is less an ordinance than a cautionary tale about scale. Mayor Andy Thomson, Jon Perlman and Stacy Sipple voted yes. Deputy Mayor Michelle Grau and Yvette Drucker voted no, both arguing the city was legislating a dispute between two neighbors.
