Boca's new animal feeding ban started with about 200 pigeons, the city is paying $519,925 for a Memorial Park master plan, and downtown's tallest tower is renting two parking spaces for $4,000 a year.

Let's get into it.

The Rundown

The city's new feeding ban started with one street and about 200 pigeons 🐦

Boca now bans feeding nuisance animals, including iguanas, rats and mice. The City Council passed the ordinance 3-2 on August 25.

Bird feeders and the occasional duck at the pond are still fine.

It grew out of a fight on NW Spanish River Boulevard, where one resident says a neighbor's feeding draws 150 to 200 pigeons that have damaged his roof and outdoor furniture. The city says the rule is for "extraordinary situations where many, many animals are being attracted to a location." Mayor Andy Thomson, Stacy Sipple and Jon Pearlman voted yes. Yvette Drucker and Michelle Grau voted no. A code complaint was filed on September 1, and more inspections are set for later this month.

Your backyard bird feeder is safe. Two hundred pigeons are not.

The city is paying $519,925 to rethink Memorial Park and City Hall 🌴

The City Council approved a $519,925 contract with Chen Moore and Associates for a master plan covering Memorial Park and the downtown civic area.

It covers about 17 city-owned acres, including City Hall, the Community Center, the Tennis Center and Singing Pines.

A $52,000 contingency brings the total to $571,925. The work runs about six months, and $52,620 of it is for community listening before a design charrette. The vote was 3-0. Deputy Mayor Michelle Grau recused herself and Jon Pearlman was absent. One resident at the meeting compared the price to Boulder, Colorado, which paid $600,000 for a plan covering 64,000 acres.

There's a listening phase. Show up and use it.

A downtown tower is paying $4,000 a year for two parking spaces 🅿

Tower 155, downtown's tallest building at 155 East Boca Raton Road, is leasing two metered spaces out front from the city as an official loading zone.

It's $2,000 per space per year, and the spaces are theirs from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday.

After hours and on weekends, spaces 5305 and 5306 go back to public metered parking. The deal runs one year, can be extended two more, and the city can take the spaces back if it doesn't work. Until now, moving trucks and deliveries used the roughly 10-foot alley beside the 12-story tower, which is too tight for two vehicles to pass when a truck is stopped.

Parking on East Boca Raton Road on a weekday? Skip those two.
